Types of Hospice Care

Hospice has different levels of care to be able to meet the needs of the patient and caregiver. Care provided in each level includes nursing, home health aides, social work, bereavement counseling, spiritual support and therapy services. Beacon Hospice in Bangor provides all hospice services for each level of care. The difference is where the care is provided – at the patient’s home or in a third-party inpatient facility.

Routine Home Care – Most eligible patients are admitted under the Routine Home Care level of care. This is the standard level of hospice care and provides all hospice services to the patient and caregivers.

Continuous Home Care – If the patient has symptoms that require more intensive support, they may receive Continuous Home Care for a short period of time. These symptoms may include unrelieved pain, severe shortness of breath, or severe nausea and vomiting. At this level of care, a nurse and/or home health aide may stay in the patient’s home for longer periods of time to help relieve the patient’s symptoms.

General Inpatient Care – If a patient cannot get adequate relief from pain and other symptoms, they may be eligible for short-term care at a third-party inpatient facility. In a hospital, hospice unit or skilled nursing facility, patients have 24/7 access to nursing care, medications and other supports to keep them comfortable, with hospice continuing to manage the patient’s care.

Respite Care – Respite services are available to give family members a break from caregiving. The patient spends up to 5 days/5 nights in a third-party inpatient setting. While others provide care to their loved one, the caregiver can have a needed break. After the respite stay, the patient returns home.

Is Hospice Care Right for You?

Sometimes it’s hard to decide if hospice is the answer. Here are some important facts to consider:

  • Hospice is for patients with a terminal illness, who the doctor certifies have six months or less to live.
  • Medicare, Medicaid, the Veterans Administration and private insurance typically cover 100% of hospice costs for eligible patients.
  • You can receive hospice care wherever you call home. This can be a private residence. It can also be a facility such as a nursing home, assisted living, hospital or hospice center.

Too often, people wait until their loved one has just days or weeks to live before getting the comprehensive care hospice provides. If you think your loved one may benefit from hospice, call Beacon Hospice in Bangor at (207) 942-2920. We’ve provided hospice care in Bangor and the surrounding area since 2007. We’d be honored to care for you and your loved one.
